Showtrials have been an integral and essential element in shoring up the perimeters of virtually every authoritarian state. These trials have usually served as a prelude to or as a reaffirming of the drift towards totalitarianism. In such showtrials dissent, opposition to tyranny, and even a simple reluctance to participate in the schemes of authoritarian leaders have historically been met with a disproportionately violent response.
